A new program has been introduced in the hopes of reducing power that businesses use, paying them for their decreased consumption.

Salt River Project (SRP) has revealed their new program as of Jan. 29, which will incentivize businesses to use less energy during times when usage would put a larger toll on the resources, such as during wholesale price increases, times with energy system issues and extreme weather conditions, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

The director of customer programs at SRP, Dan Dreiling, anticipates that businesses would be asked to help by cutting their usage five to ten times throughout the summer.

Companies that are not able to comply with the reduction requests would not be penalized, they will just miss out on the pay they would have received for cutting usage.

“Businesses can earn anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars,” Dreiling said.

Beyond businesses, individuals who reside in the area can also participate through smart thermostat technology. All they have to do is raise their thermostats one to two degrees in the summer to receive a $25 bonus.
