A fiber optic conduit is being installed at three interstate corridors – I-19, I-40 and most of I-17 by the State of Arizona.
These conduits will hopefully help bridge the technological gap between urban and rural communities.
Ben Blink, Gov. Doug Ducey's transportation policy advisor, spoke about the improvement in technological infrastructure coming to Arizona.
“We're building the infrastructure for ADOT's purposes, they'll own it," Blink told GV News. "And then over the next year, we're engaging with several entities to develop our model for how we use that surplus conduit in the most effective way possible.”
Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) plans to finish laying its fiber on I-19 by 2021. The fiber will stretch from Tucson to Nogales.
According to GV News, the fiber and conduit will not be visible to the public but the cameras and all wrong-way detection signs will be quite noticeable.
“We do not expect massive road disruptions, there may be rolling closures as the machine moves along the side of the road for just one lane," Blink said.
