Cartels have used tunnels for years to transport narcotics, guns and money between Mexico and the United States.
Since 1990, law enforcement officials have discovered more than 230 cross-border tunnels, according to a press release from the office of Sen. Martha McSally (R-Arizona).
The Arizona senator introduced legislation to combat the problem and Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Arizona) introduced similar legislation in the House of Representatives.
“Cartels have long exploited underground tunnels to smuggle drugs into the U.S., posing a direct threat to our national security,” McSally said in a press release. “In fact, the Department of Homeland Security recently discovered the most sophisticated cross-border tunnel ever built in U.S. history, which ran from a neighborhood in Mexico to San Luis, Arizona. This dangerous practice must be stopped.”
Lesko said illicit border tunnels are a "serious threat" to our nation's security.
“Martha is introducing the Senate companion to this important legislation, and I applaud her for her continued leadership on border security,” Lesko said.
