The University of Arizona (UArizona) plans to gradually increase students receiving in-person instruction, with an expected 1,500 students returning to campus each week.
Students in classes with 30 students or fewer enrolled will be returning to in-person instruction with approximately half of the current semester remaining, according to a UArizona news release.
"This is lower than our initial estimate of about 2,500 students because students and their instructors had the opportunity to evaluate what they wanted and, in the spirit of shared governance, make collective decisions about how to proceed at this point," Robert Robbins, University of Arizona president, said in the release. "There are many, many students who want that in-person interaction and many professors who want that in-person interaction, but, obviously, there are people who don't want it, so we've given them the option."
The university stated that the decision to permit in-person instruction for more classes was based on improving public health metrics in and around campus.
