Coconino County issued the following announcement on July 12.
The Coconino County Flood Control District and City of Flagstaff are preparing for possible flash flooding this week in the Museum Flood Area.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting a moderate threat of flooding over the next several days from monsoon storms, including scattered thunderstorms and rain showers in Flagstaff with the greatest threat on Tuesday. These storms may impact the Museum burn scar and cause flooding to downstream neighborhoods.
Beginning today, Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16, the Flagstaff area is likely to see monsoonal activity daily. The greater potential threat will be from any isolated, embedded thunderstorm. Even small rain events falling over saturated ground could greatly increase run-off. Optimal conditions for active thunderstorm activity are currently expected to continue into next week.
All Museum Flood Area residents should be prepared to shelter in place during a flood event and have emergency Stay Kits for their homes that contain enough supplies to support their families for at least 72 hours. Residents also are encouraged to listen to their weather radios as the National Weather Service is prepared to issue any necessary flood advisories or warnings.
