2021 Sustainable Building Tour - Carbon Neutrality Strategies

Announcement2

Coconino County issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.

This  Saturday, September 25, the Coconino County Sustainable Building Program was hosting the 17th annual Sustainable Building Tour, in partnership with the Flagstaff Festival of Science, Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, and the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Program.

In light of growing concern around climate change and its impacts, and to embrace this year’s Flagstaff Festival of Science theme “Stories in Stone,” the title of the County’s 2021 tour is “Sustainable Building – A Keystone to Carbon Neutrality.” Carbon neutral refers to “achieving net-zero carbon emissions” or “having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in carbon sinks.” As with previous tours, each location highlights sustainable building methods, systems, and materials such as rainwater harvesting and renewable energy systems; but this year’s tour has a specific focus on tools and approaches for reducing the carbon footprints of homes and buildings, including development that uses low embodied carbon or carbon sequestering methods.

This year’s tour showcases eight properties and will be held through a combination of in-person and online with a virtual tour. Event participants are asked to adhere to CDC guidelines and County regulations.
