Wildcats Drop Five Set Heartbreaker to UNLV

University of Arizona Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.

Arizona fell in five sets to the Rebels in the second round of the NIVC. UNLV won the first two sets, then the Wildcats came back to win sets three and four, but the Rebels won the final set.

Set 1 | Arizona – 22, UNLV - 25

UNLV won the first set 25-22. Jaelyn Hodge and Sofia Maldonado Diaz each had four kills and Zyonna Fellows recorded two blocks. Although Arizona tallied six blocks, the Rebels held onto an early lead that the Cats couldn't catch.

Set 2 | Arizona - 20, UNLV - 25

The Rebels won the second set 25-20 to take a two-set lead in the match. Hodge recorded four kills again and Fellows also had four kills and a solo block. Jaleesa Caroccio and Emery Herman each served an ace, but the Rebels had five blocks to keep Arizona's attack at bay.

Set 3 | Arizona - 25, UNLV - 17

After falling in the first two sets, Arizona came out strong in the third set to win 25-17. Hodge led the attack again with four kills. Alayna Johnson and Maldonado Diaz each had three kills and Dilara Gedikoglu had two kills. Arizona's defense was led by Herman with three block assists and a block solo. Johnson helped Herman on her three block assists at the beginning of the set to give Arizona the lead. Gedikoglu secured the third set for the Cats with her third kill of the match.

Set 4 | Arizona - 25, UNLV - 19

Arizona won the fourth set 25-19. Hodge found her momentum in the fourth set with eight kills to lead the attack. Johnson tallied four kills and Gedikoglu, Herman, and Maldonado Diaz each had two kills for the Cats. Arizona took a seven-point lead on a kill from Herman and held the lead the rest of the set to force a fifth set.

Set 5 | Arizona - 9, UNLV - 15

The Rebels won the final set 15-9. Hodge recorded three kills in the fifth set, giving her 23 kills in the match to lead all attackers. Kamaile Hiapo picked up three digs in the set to earn a career best 30 kills in the match. Despite Arizona's strong offense, UNLV was able to overcome the Wildcats to win the match.
