Sahuarita NJROTC Orienteering Team Qualifies for Navy National Orienteering Invitational

Sahuarita Mustang Athletics issued the following announcement on Feb. 1.

Sahuarita NJROTC Orienteering Team Qualifies for Navy National Orienteering Invitational

The Sahuarita NJROTC Orienteering team competed against 150 cadets from NJROTC schools in California and Nevada on Sunday, 23 January 2022 at Frank Bonelli Park in San Dimas, CA. Sahuarita NJROTC finished 1st in the Varsity Division, 1st in the Junior Varsity Division, and 1st Overall to win the California Orienteering Championship. The meet was conducted by the Los Angeles Orienteering Club.

Orienteering is a sport that originated in Scandinavia and is extremely popular world wide. It is a combination of long range running and land navigation skills. High School orienteering meets consist of different courses that vary in length and difficulty of navigation. Caleb Forehand and Julian Almazan ran the Green Course, Ryely McIntyre and Shayla Blair ran the Brown Course, and Hyrum Thompson, Jonah Forehand, Coda McCord, and Paynton McIntyre ran the Orange Course. Shayla Blair was the top female runner on the Brown Course and Hyrum Thompson was the top runner on the JV course. Scoring is done by the top three runner's times and places contributing to the overall team score.

The Navy National Orienteering Invitational will be held in San Jose, CA on 12-13 March 2022 and will consist of 31 schools. Runners will run two different courses on different days for the combined team score
