Artist's Statement/Biography:

Drawings by Chi-Vas

I began drawing with ink for the first time in 2017.  My first completed drawing was abstract, it was freeing, which felt good.  I chose to draw with ink simply because it meant that I couldn't erase if there was something about the drawing that I didn't like.  I've always been slow and meticulous at drawing anything. I used to be afraid of making a mistake, because if I did, it meant that I would have had to start all over.  I'm still a bit intimidated by drawing to this day. I must continually tell myself to relax, have an open mind and just let it flow.

I've fallen in love with ink, but most of all, I've fallen in love with the concept of drawing with freedom.  Drawing with ink takes my mind on a journey.  Using my imagination along with each stroke, line and shape allowed me to devise a technique that feels to me as instinctive and original.  Using ink and my new form of drawing allows me to think free, feel free and shun perfection. I use only black ink in my drawings.  The color black is simplistic and unbiased; It's bold and indifferent and demands attention.  To appease those who love the look and technique of my drawings but want more color, I often change the color and textures of the paper I print on and allow it to expresses mood and setting.

For those who admire my drawings, thank you.  My drawings are crafted and filled with texture and technique, motion and movement.  My hope is to capture the viewer and allow them to interpret the drawing in their own way, see things in the drawing that maybe no one else sees, remind them of something familiar or show them something they've never seen.
