The road into Summerhaven in 1978

The road into Summerhaven in 1978.

The area sure looks different these days, especially since the devastation of the Aspen Fire of 2003. The blaze charred more than 84,000 acres and razed 340 homes and businesses.

Another wildfire, the Bighorn Fire of 2020, burned nearly 220,000 acres in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Fortunately, Summerhaven and the surrounding community were spared any structural damage. The size and force of the blaze left vast tracts of the mountain denuded and scorched. The burn scar left in the aftermath has begun to recover but still poses risks of fire-related flooding.

The red phone booth in the photo also makes us nostalgic. For youngsters out there, before there were cellphones, if you needed to make a call and weren't at home, you dropped some money into one of these and placed your call.
