From January 17, 2023 post.
The shoulder of Interstate 17 is not the place for sledding or building snowmen.
We get it. People are excited to see the snow. But northbound I-17 at milepost 314 -- this is where these photos were taken -- is not a snow playground.
Highway shoulders are for emergencies only. Don't stop, park and play in the snow.
The reasons come down to safety:
❄Other drivers may be distracted by your vehicle; other drivers may pull over as well to play in the snow, compounding the problem.
❄Your vehicle may interfere with first responders who need to use the shoulder.
❄ADOT snowplows hurl snow and ice far off highways.
❄Then there’s the obvious danger of parking and playing near fast-moving traffic that's using what could be a still-icy road.
If your destination is the Flagstaff area, Discover Flagstaff maintains a winter recreation areas map that that can be a useful resource for finding a safe place to play in the snow.
