On Thursday, February 16, 2023, at 1354 hours, the SPD received information of a possible threat incident at Walden Grove High School. The initial information indicated a student or students may have received, by way of a text message or air drop, a picture of a “grenade” along with a threat possibly indicating blowing up “the place.”
All SPD resources were assigned to this incident and responded to Walden Grove High School, where they made contact with school staff, including the Principal and Vice Principals. Additionally, Pima County Sherriff’s Deputy’s responded to assist with security and processes at the school.
The school immediately went into lockdown. While initially on scene, information about shots being possibly fired on campus came out; however, officers on scene were not able to confirm any shots being fired. At this time and after contact with multiple school officials, there are no known injuries to students or staff.
Walden Grove High School is still in lockdown and conducting its roll call process. There are numerous SPD and PCSD officers on campus. Access to the campus is blocked. Please remain off campus. We have both uniformed and non-uniformed law enforcement officers on the scene.
SPD initially reached out to Green Valley News, as our local media, and advised them of information associated with this incident.Parents are being requested to stage for unification at the SUSD district auditorium parking lot, 350 W. Sahuarita Rd. We will advise ASAP when students will begin to arrive at that location.
As of the writing of this Media Release, further investigation has resulted in the detention of two male Walden Grove High School students associated with this threat incident. One of them, reportedly, had a “fake grenade” which has been secured by SPD. PCSD EOD unit is now on the scene at the high school. The “fake grenade” is not in a position to harm any students.
SUSD and SPD are working together to provide a safe and orderly reunification of students with their families.
