Pima County’s districts student body comprised mostly of Latino students in 2022-23 school year

The majority of students in Pima County districts were Latino in the 2022-23 school year, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Of the 143,604 students attending school districts within Pima County, 56% were Latino. White students were the second largest ethnicity in Pima County districts (30.1%).

In the previous school year, Latino students were also the most common group in Pima County districts, representing 55.4% of the student body.

Amphitheater Unified District had the most even distribution of races among county districts, which included 44.2% Latino students, 43.1% white students, 4.7% Black or African American students, 3.3% multiracial students, 2.6% Asian students, 1.7% American Indian or Alaska Native students, and 0.5% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander students.

In the 2022-23 school year, the total number of students enrolled in school districts in the county dropped 1.1% when compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Pima County.

A 2023 study from Scholaroo.com ranked Arizona last out of all U.S. states in terms of educational success, giving the state poor marks for school quality, student success, and teacher-to-student ratio.

Additionally, WalletHub claimed Arizona’s school system ranked among the worst across the U.S. for class size, performance, funding, safety, and instructors’ credentials.
