Tucson Unified District had the highest enrollment among Pima County districts, welcoming 40,534 students during the 2023-24 academic year, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2023-24 school year, 51.3% of them were boys, and 48.7% were girls.

Data also showed that the majority of students were Latino, representing 65.8% of the Tucson Unified District total enrollment.

Among the 14 districts in Pima County, Vail Unified District ranked second in enrollment numbers with 14,799 students, while Sunnyside Unified District welcomed 14,140 students and ranked third in the 2023-24 school year.

Tucson Unified District roughly covers schools within Pima County and has a main office in Tucson.

In the previous school year, Tucson Unified District also had the highest number of students among Pima County districts.

A 2023 study from Scholaroo.com ranked Arizona last out of all U.S. states in terms of educational success, giving the state poor marks for school quality, student success, and teacher-to-student ratio.

Additionally, WalletHub claimed Arizona's school system ranked among the worst across U.S. for class size, performance, funding, safety, and instructors' credentials.
